What is a large painted chest used for?

These large storage pieces served varied domestic and commercial purposes, from holding household linen and marriage dowries to organising merchant stock in Victorian shops. Today, owners utilise them as statement coffee tables, blanket boxes at the foot of a bed or substantial living room storage.

How do I identify original paint?

Original paint exhibits natural craquelure, fading and wear patterns consistent with age and environmental exposure. It sits deeply within the wood grain rather than forming a uniform modern plastic film. Examining corners and edges reveals older underlying layers where handling occurred most frequently.

Are shop fittings different from domestic chests?

Commercial shop fittings, such as chemist drawers and haberdashers cabinets, feature numerous small compartments built for mercantile utility. Domestic chests prioritise large open internal cavities or wide drawer configurations for clothing. Both categories utilise heavy pine construction and painted exterior finishes.

How should I care for historic painted surfaces?

Historic painted finishes require gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth to prevent abrasive particle build-up. Avoid chemical solvents, harsh household cleaners and excessive moisture that could lift fragile original pigments from the wood substrate.
