How do I hang a heavy landscape painting?

Large canvases and framed watercolours require secure wall fixings anchored directly into wall studs or masonry using heavy-duty picture hooks rated for the weight. Because these pieces often span significant width, using two separate hanging points distributes the load evenly and prevents the frame from shifting out of level.

What is a verdure tapestry?

A verdure tapestry is a historic woven wall hanging dominated by botanical scenes, dense trees, foliage and distant pastoral landscapes. Originating largely from Flemish and French workshops in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, they were designed to insulate stone walls and bring nature indoors.

How do I care for antique canvas art?

Protect oil paintings and watercolours by keeping them away from direct sunlight, which can fade pigments and discolour varnishes over time. Maintain a stable room temperature and humidity level to prevent the wooden stretcher frames from warping and the canvas from slackening.

Are these frames original?

Many nineteenth-century and vintage pieces retain their period giltwood frames, which show appropriate signs of age and wear consistent with the canvas. A matching period frame enhances the historical context of a large landscape, though some works have been reframed over the decades to suit changing tastes.
