Where should an overmantel mirror hang?

These mirrors traditionally hang centrally on the wall directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, resting securely on its shelf or fixed to the brickwork. Because of their considerable height and weight, secure wall fixings are essential to support the frame safely above the hearth.

How do I identify a Victorian overmantel mirror?

Victorian examples generally date from the mid to late nineteenth century and often feature arched tops, heavy giltwood frames, and elaborate gesso mouldings. Many incorporate specific stylistic revivals, such as Rococo or French Chateau influences, alongside robust wooden backing construction.

Are these mirrors suitable for rooms without fireplaces?

While designed specifically to occupy the wall space above a mantelpiece, their grand scale and reflective glass make them effective wall mirrors in other large rooms. They function well as statement pieces on plain walls, provided the wall structure can bear the weight of the timber and gesso frame.
