What were large copper pitchers used for?

These vessels served practical roles in taverns, homes, and agricultural settings for carrying, measuring, and serving liquids like water, milk, or ale in large quantities. Over time, many transitioned into decorative items due to their impressive scale and warm metallic appearance.

How do I identify a Georgian copper jug?

Georgian examples often feature hand-beaten construction, early capacity stamps, and heavy-gauge copper joined with visible seams and brass attachments. Stylistic cues match the utilitarian standards of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries before Victorian mass standardisation.

What is a haystack measure?

A haystack measure is a specific type of British liquid capacity vessel known for its curved, tapering profile that resembles a traditional stack of hay. These pieces were strictly regulated for commercial measurement and often bear verification marks from the period of their use.

How should I clean antique copper?

Most collectors prefer to leave an aged patination on antique copper, as it reflects the item's age and history of use. If cleaning is necessary, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner formulated for historical metals to avoid removing the surface layer.
