What is a pricket candlestick?

A pricket candlestick uses a sharp vertical spike to hold a candle in place instead of a traditional cylindrical socket. This design was common on large altar and church pieces where heavy candles required secure mounting. Such examples date largely from the nineteenth century and offer significant height compared to standard domestic lighting.

How do I date an antique candlestick?

Dating relies on identifying manufacturing techniques, stylistic revivals, and material compositions recorded in the piece. Methods shifted from hand-finished casting in earlier periods to more industrial production by the late nineteenth century. Stylistic cues like Gothic Revival or Amsterdam School placement help narrow the decade of origin alongside any visible construction seams.

Were these used in homes or churches?

The selection includes both domestic lighting and ecclesiastical wares created for religious spaces. Church pieces typically stand much taller and often feature pricket tops or heavy cast brass construction. Domestic items include ejector candlesticks and table lamps designed for nineteenth-century parlours and drawing rooms.

Can these be converted to electricity?

Many large candlesticks and candelabra arrive converted to electric table lamps, while others remain configured purely for wax candles. Conversions usually accommodate internal wiring without destroying the structural integrity of the metal shaft. Pricket candlesticks are occasionally adapted, though many collectors prefer to retain their original configuration for display.
