How do I hang heavy antique art safely?

Heavy oil paintings and carved panels require secure wall anchors fixed directly into masonry or wooden studs. Professional picture hanging hooks rated for the specific weight of the canvas and frame must be utilised. Ensuring the hanging wire or heavy D-rings on the rear of the frame match the support capacity prevents structural strain on the artwork over time.

How should I clean antique textile wall hangings?

Antique textiles such as wool shawls, crewelwork panels, and tapestries demand gentle care to preserve fragile fibres. Vacuuming should only occur on a low suction setting through a protective mesh screen. Harsh chemical cleaners and water immersion must be avoided entirely. Professional textile conservators should handle deep cleaning or structural repairs.

What lighting protects oil paintings from damage?

Oil paintings benefit from indirect lighting that avoids excessive heat and ultraviolet rays. LED picture lights designed specifically for art display provide adequate illumination without harming the pigment. Placing large canvases away from direct sunlight prevents the canvas and surrounding gilt wood frames from drying out or fading prematurely.

How do I identify the period of a frame?

Frame construction offers clear clues to a piece's age, visible through corner joinery, wood types, and gesso application. Hogarth frames and heavy gilt wood mouldings carry distinct profiles characteristic of their era of manufacture. Looking at the reverse of the frame often reveals old fixings, maker stamps, or exhibition labels that confirm the historical timeline.
