Where were kelleh long runners made?

These textiles originate primarily from Persian regional centres and tribal workshops, including Kurdish areas, Bidjar, Malayer, and Hamadan. Weavers across these distinct districts applied local design vocabularies and traditional dyeing methods to produce these elongated formats.

How do I use a long runner at home?

A large format runner suits long hallways, galleries, and spacious corridors where standard rugs prove too narrow or short. They also function well beneath large dining tables or anchoring furniture arrangements in high-ceilinged living rooms.

What motifs appear on these carpets?

Common design elements include geometric medallions, tree of life compositions, and repeating boteh patterns across the central field. Borders frequently display traditional geometric structures, crab patterns, or stylised floral guard stripes characteristic of Persian weaving.

How do I date an antique kelleh?

Dating relies on assessing the wool quality, hand-spun characteristics, dye palette transitions, and stylistic consistency within specific regional groups. Earlier nineteenth-century examples often display greater variations in hand-spun wool texture compared to twentieth-century production.
