How does an Atmos clock wind itself?

An Atmos clock operates using a hermetically sealed expansion chamber inside the movement. Fluctuations in room temperature cause the gas within this capsule to expand and contract, winding the mainspring automatically. Because temperature changes of only one degree are sufficient to power the mechanism for hours, the clock requires neither batteries nor manual winding.

Where should I place a desk clock?

These timepieces suit stable surfaces like mantelpieces, sideboards, studies and office desks where vibrations are minimal. Atmos models specifically require a steady, level shelf away from direct sunlight and drafts to function accurately. Placing them in a prominent interior location protects the delicate mechanical balance from accidental knocks and sudden environmental shifts.

What maintenance do these clocks require?

Mechanical desk clocks benefit from professional servicing every few years to clean old oils and ensure the gear train operates smoothly. Keeping the exterior glass and metal housings clean preserves the original finish. Avoid attempting internal repairs yourself, as the delicate escapements and hairsprings demand specialist horological tools and expertise.
