How are antique Italian lights wired?

Many historical fixtures originally designed for candles have been adapted for modern electrical supply. Professional conversion typically involves running internal wiring through the carved wooden arms or standards without compromising the historic exterior. Buyers should consult a qualified electrician to ensure that converted pieces meet current safety standards and support appropriate bulb wattages. Careful installation preserves the structural integrity of the antique timber and gesso surfaces.

How do I identify a Florentine style light?

Florentine lighting pieces frequently feature characteristic gesso and giltwood finishes with scrolling foliage and carved floral motifs. These designs often manifest as multi-arm chandeliers or matched pairs of wall lights produced in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Unlike the more theatrical Venetian Baroque examples, Florentine items tend to emphasise balanced symmetry and intricate surface carving. Polychrome highlights in muted tones frequently accompany the gilding on these pieces.

How should I care for giltwood lighting?

Giltwood surfaces require gentle maintenance to preserve the delicate gold leaf and underlying gesso layers. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth prevents the accumulation of particulate matter without abrading the metallic finish. Keep these fixtures away from direct moisture and fluctuating heat sources to prevent the wood from warping and the gesso from cracking. Professional conservation is recommended if structural or surface repairs become necessary.
