What is a hessian seat armchair?

A hessian seat armchair is a traditional upholstered chair that relies on strong jute webbing and coarse fabric beneath its outer covers to support the cushion and frame. These chairs span multiple centuries and regional styles, from heavy Italian baroque seating to comfortable English library armchairs.

How do I identify the period?

You can distinguish periods by examining the timber species, the carved decorative motifs, and the overall proportions of the wooden frame. Earlier pieces often display ornate Italian rococo or baroque carving, while nineteenth-century examples lean towards substantial upholstered comfort in the manner of English workshops.

Were these chairs used for reading?

Many examples on this page are specifically designated as library chairs or open arm chairs designed for prolonged sitting. Their deep seats and supportive armrests made them suitable for studies and reading rooms in large houses.

How do I care for the upholstery?

Living with these chairs involves protecting the exposed wooden frames from direct heat and dry indoor air while gently vacuuming the fabric layers. Regular inspection of the underlying hessian and webbing helps maintain the structural tension of the seat over time.
