How do I date a silver letter opener?

Dating relies on the stamped hallmarks, which include a date letter corresponding to the specific assay year and town office. Additional clues come from the stylistic traits of periods like Georgian, Victorian, or Edwardian manufacture.

What materials are paired with silver?

Silversmiths mounted silver blades or handles alongside organic materials including mother-of-pearl, agate, tortoiseshell, and enamel. Steel also appears on functional cutting edges within combination knife forms.

Were these used purely for letters?

While primarily intended as desk accessories for opening envelopes, many examples double as paper knives or page turners for books. Some historical forms merge desk utility with game skewer designs.

How do I care for silver and tortoiseshell?

Store items away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect organic handle inserts like tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl. Gentle cleaning with a soft cloth preserves both the metal hallmarks and the delicate natural materials.
