What is a silver christening mug?

A silver christening mug is a small commemorative drinking vessel given to a child upon their baptism or birth. Families traditionally presented these silver pieces as enduring gifts meant to be kept for a lifetime. Over the centuries, silversmiths produced these mugs in styles reflecting Georgian, Victorian, and Art Deco tastes. They remain popular decorative and collectible items today.

How do I read silver hallmarks?

Silver hallmarks are a series of small stamped symbols indicating where, when, and by whom an item was made. They usually include a maker mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, an assay office symbol, and a date letter. Consulting official assay records helps match the date letter to the exact year of manufacture. This system provides a reliable history for British silver.

Are these mugs safe to use?

While these mugs were originally designed for use, many collectors prefer to keep them as display pieces. Sterling silver is generally safe for contact with liquids, though historical pieces require gentle hand washing. Harsh abrasives can damage delicate engravings and wear away thin gilt interiors over time. Regular care keeps the silver surface bright without harming the metal.

Why do some mugs have gold interiors?

Some christening mugs feature a gold wash, known as vermeil, applied over the interior silver surface. Silversmiths used this technique to prevent acidic beverages from tarnishing or reacting with the sterling silver. This decorative finish also added a pleasing contrast between the bright exterior silver and the warm interior gold tone.
