Are partners desks double sided?

Partners desks are finished on all sides, featuring drawers and cupboards accessible from both the front and the back. They were originally built for business partners or banking associates to work face to face. This construction means the desk stands cleanly in the middle of a room rather than against a wall. They require substantial floor space due to their generous proportions.

How do I care for leather desk tops?

Leather writing surfaces benefit from gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth and occasional treatment with specialist leather balms or waxes. Avoid excessive moisture and harsh chemical cleaners to preserve the gilt tooling. Using blotters or desk pads protects the historic leather from ink stains and deep scratches while allowing you to write comfortably.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Edwardian desks?

Victorian desks tend to be heavier, constructed from dark mahogany or walnut with robust mouldings and deep pedestals. Edwardian pieces often display lighter timbers such as satinwood, mahogany with delicate inlay, or kidney-shaped writing tables. The later Edwardian period favoured refined elegance and lighter proportions, whereas the Victorian era prioritized solidity and rich, dark grain patterns.
