How do I date a giltwood armchair?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction beneath the gilding and the style of the carved ornamentation. Nineteenth century pieces often adopt earlier French forms like the Louis sixteenth style. Material choices such as specific brass fittings or the weave of the underlying upholstery fabric also help narrow down the period of manufacture.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

These salon chairs were built for formal entertaining rather than modern lounging. Their supportive frames and padded seats upholstered in velvet or tapestry offer a firm sit. Living with them involves appreciating their decorative presence in a room while respecting their age and historic textile coverings.

What is the difference between Louis XV and Louis XVI styles?

Louis fifteenth style pieces feature flowing asymmetrical lines, cabriole legs, and naturalistic curves. They emphasise movement and organic shapes in the carved wood. Louis sixteenth pieces introduce straight lines, fluted columns, and neoclassical symmetry. Both styles appear frequently in nineteenth century giltwood seating.

How should I care for giltwood and antique fabric?

Giltwood requires gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth to protect the delicate gold leaf finish from abrasion or moisture. Avoid chemical cleaning agents entirely. Upholstery made from velvet or tapestry should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and protected with professional textile care.
