How do I date an antique gold frame?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods of the wood backing and the composition of the gesso layer. Older examples often feature hand-carved wooden mouldings rather than moulded composition ornament. Changes in gilding techniques and the ageing of the underlying materials also offer clear chronological markers for collectors.

Are these artworks original paintings or prints?

The selection includes both original oil paintings and historical engravings or prints. Listings specify the medium, distinguishing hand-painted oils on canvas from works on paper. Examining the surface texture under magnification helps confirm whether the pigment sits directly on fabric or panel.

How should I hang heavy gilt framed art?

Heavy pieces require secure wall anchors fixed directly into structural studs rather than standard plaster fixings. The substantial weight of wood and gesso surrounds demands robust hardware. Professional picture hangers utilise two suspension points to distribute the load evenly and prevent shifting.

What periods do these wall artworks cover?

The available pieces span from the late seventeenth century through the Victorian era and into the mid-twentieth century. Georgian, Baroque, and Edwardian periods are well represented. Each era brings distinct stylistic conventions in both the painting subject and the framing design.
