How are wall brackets mounted?

Most antique wall brackets feature integrated hanging loops or screw holes on the backplate. Installers should secure them directly into wall studs or use appropriate heavy-duty wall anchors to support the weight of the wood and metal. Because these pieces often bear the weight of displayed objects or lighting, checking the stability of the hanging mechanism is essential before placing any load upon the shelf.

Can these brackets hold electric lights?

Many wall lights and sconces designed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been adapted for modern electrical wiring. Professional electricians can safely thread modern wiring through the existing brass or bronze arms. Original candle sconces retain their drip pans and nozzles, allowing them to be used with either traditional wax candles or modern LED equivalents depending on the desired ambience.

How do I clean gilded surfaces?

Gilded wood, gesso and metal require gentle maintenance to preserve the delicate gold leaf layer. Use a soft, dry ostrich feather duster to remove surface dust without rubbing the finish. Avoid all chemical cleaners, water and abrasive cloths, as moisture and friction will strip the fragile gilding away from the underlying wood or plaster.

What is the difference between a bracket and a sconce?

A wall bracket typically refers to a projecting shelf or decorative mount designed to support an object such as a clock, urn or display item. They often feature flat or moulded tops for this purpose. A sconce specifically denotes a wall-mounted lighting fixture with arms designed to hold candles or bulbs, though the terms sometimes overlap in historical listings when a bracket incorporates lighting arms.
