Where should I place a large bookcase in my home?

Position your bookcase against an interior wall away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources such as radiators to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Ensure the floor is level so the heavy carcase doors hang square and close properly against the frame. Allow adequate clearance in front of the lower section if you choose a model with a secretaire desk drawer or deep cupboard doors. Wall-fixing brackets are advisable for tall proportions to ensure absolute stability.

How do I care for antique glass and timber surfaces?

Dust timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax periodically to nourish the grain without building up a sticky residue. Avoid silicone-based sprays which can penetrate open-grain woods like oak and mahogany. Clean the glass panes using a sparing amount of proprietary glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly, preventing moisture from seeping into the wooden glazing bars.

Can I adjust the shelf heights inside the display cabinets?

Many period bookcases feature fixed wooden shelving supported on fixed cleats, while later examples incorporate adjustable wooden peg systems or rack-and-pinion strip hardware. Check the interior vertical sides of the cabinet for slotted wooden fillets which indicate adjustable capacity. If shelves are fixed, plan your book or display object sizes accordingly rather than attempting to alter antique structural elements.
