How do I clean the glass?

Use a soft cloth and mild glass cleaner applied directly to the cloth rather than the wood. This prevents moisture from damaging antique polishes and delicate glazing bars. Take care around older hand-blown glass panes, which may be thinner and more susceptible to pressure.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many examples feature adjustable wooden shelving supported by traditional wooden racks or metal pegs. This allows you to alter shelf heights to accommodate larger volumes or display items. Simpler regional cabinets may have fixed shelves built directly into the carcase structure.

How do I secure the doors?

Most pieces retain their original working brass locks and keys to secure both the upper glazed doors and lower cupboards. Keeping mechanisms lightly waxed ensures smooth operation without forcing the wood. Warpage in older timber can sometimes misalign doors, which is corrected by checking the levelling of the cabinet on uneven floors.

Can I paint a pine bookcase?

Victorian and Edwardian pine pieces frequently appear in waxed or painted finishes depending on their original domestic context. Many utilitarian cabinets were designed to be painted or waxed according to interior preferences. Mahogany and walnut pieces are generally left in their polished wood finishes to preserve the grain and veneer work.
