How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Large overmantel mirrors require secure wall anchors fixed directly into masonry or substantial timber studs. Professional installation ensures the considerable weight of the carved wood and glass is properly supported. Position the frame at a height that complements the surrounding architectural proportions of the room.

How should I clean a antique gilt frame?

Dust the carved wooden surfaces gently using a soft, dry brush to avoid disturbing the fragile gold leaf. Liquid cleaners can damage historic gesso and metal finishes. Keep the mirror away from direct moisture and strong temperature fluctuations to preserve the wood.

Are antique mirror plates always replaced?

Many nineteenth and eighteenth-century mirrors retain their original glass, which often displays charming foxing and minor oxidation. Original plates show authentic signs of age rather than modern perfection. Replacements occurred when earlier glass degraded beyond functional use.

What defines a Rococo style mirror?

Rococo mirrors feature asymmetrical scrolls, C-curves, and naturalistic plant motifs carved into the wooden frame. This decorative approach originated in eighteenth-century Europe and saw revivals during the Victorian era. The aesthetic prioritises fluidity and ornate movement over rigid symmetry.
