What is gilded bronze?

Gilded bronze refers to metal sculptures coated with a layer of gold using traditional fire-gilding or modern plating techniques. This process protects the underlying bronze while creating a rich, reflective surface that highlights the sculptor's details.

How do I date a bronze?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, such as Neoclassical drapery or Art Deco geometry, alongside foundry marks and material composition. Base types, such as older marked marble or olive wood plinths, also provide chronological clues for nineteenth and early twentieth-century works.

Ormolu is a specific term for mercury gilding applied to bronze mounts and decorative objects during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The technique yields a distinctive yellow-gold appearance that does not tarnish easily.

How do I clean these sculptures?

Maintenance requires only gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of particles in recessed areas. Harsh chemical polishes must be avoided to protect the delicate surface layer of gold or the underlying patina.
