How do I tell a revival piece from an 18th-century original?

Examination of the secondary woods, internal construction methods, and tool marks usually reveals the true age of the timber frame. Revival pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian eras often employ standardised fixings and machine-cut elements not found in eighteenth-century workshops. Furthermore, the finish and patination develop distinct characteristics over centuries of use. Comparing the backboards and drawer linings against known period exemplars provides a reliable guide to dating.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many larger breakfront and glazed bookcases feature adjustable wooden shelving supported by traditional rack-and-pinion mechanisms or wooden toothed strips. This allows the internal height to be altered for different volumes. Open bookcases and smaller cabinets, however, sometimes feature fixed shelving integrated directly into the structural vertical partitions. Checking the interior sides will reveal whether the height can be modified.

How should I care for the mahogany finish?

Maintaining the surface requires keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and steady heat sources that can dry out the polished finish. Gentle dusting with a dry lint-free cloth preserves the natural lustre of the wood. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish helps nourish the grain without building up heavy residues. Avoid liquid cleaners or silicone-based sprays that can penetrate old polishes.
