How do I use an armoire today?

These large cupboards serve well as primary bedroom wardrobes for hanging clothes or as deep storage units in hallways for linens and blankets. Internal configurations often accommodate modern shelving adjustments without altering the external facade. Their robust timber construction ensures they handle daily use reliably while anchoring the room's decorative scheme.

Are these cupboards easy to move?

Many eighteenth-century pieces, particularly knockdown pine and oak variants, dismantle into modular sections for easier transport and placement. Heavier mahogany presses remain single heavy units requiring professional handling. Checking the construction style reveals whether a piece separates at the waist or cornices before relocation.

How do I distinguish oak from mahogany pieces?

Oak furniture displays prominent medullary rays and an open grain structure, typical of English country and vernacular pieces. Mahogany exhibits a tighter, reddish-brown grain that takes a high polish, common in refined urban pieces. Both timbers indicate distinct regional workshop traditions spanning the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

What is the difference between a press and a wardrobe?

A linen press traditionally combines sliding interior trays for folded textiles with a chest of drawers in the lower section. A hanging wardrobe focuses primarily on vertical garment storage behind full-length doors. Hybrid forms bridge these functions depending on the original domestic requirements of the household.
