How do I identify original paint?

Examine the surface under magnification to check for craquelure, pigment wear consistent with age, and the absence of modern synthetic undercoats. Original decoration typically shows integrated wear across the timber edges and hardware. Compare the pigment types and brushwork characteristics with documented examples from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Professional conservation reports can also verify underlying layers.

Where should I place a corner cupboard?

Wall-mounted and standing corner cabinets fit into unused room angles, making them practical for compact spaces or balanced symmetrical layouts. They function well in dining rooms for displaying ceramics or in hallways for general storage. Ensure the wall structure can support the weight of timber hanging cabinets, particularly older pine or mahogany pieces. Keep them away from direct heat sources to protect the painted surfaces and wood joints.

What is the difference between Georgian and Regency?

Georgian furniture encompasses the reigns of the first four Georges, spanning styles from heavy mahogany designs to lighter satinwood and painted neoclassical pieces. Regency design represents a more specific early nineteenth-century focus on Roman, Greek, and Egyptian classical motifs. Painted cabinets from the Regency period often incorporate faux bamboo framing or bolder contrasting colours. Georgian painted pieces tend to lean towards softer palettes or traditional chinoiserie decoration.

How do I care for painted wood?

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid commercial polishes that contain silicone or harsh solvents. Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent the timber from warping and the paint from flaking. Keep cabinets out of direct sunlight to prevent fading in the underlying pigments and lacquers. Consult a specialist restorer if structural movement or paint stabilization becomes necessary.
