What is a georgian mahogany bedside commode used for?

These cabinets originally functioned as discreet enclosures for chamber pots in upper-class bedrooms during the 18th and early 19th centuries. They offered a practical surface for a candle or bedside belongings while concealing sanitation equipment. Today, modern owners repurpose them as compact bedside tables, lamp tables, or small side cabinets. Their enclosed cupboards provide discreet storage for contemporary bedroom essentials.

How do I tell an 18th-century piece from a later copy?

Examining the timber selection, construction joints, and interior secondary woods helps identify the period. Genuine 18th-century examples often utilise solid Cuban mahogany or early veneers with hand-cut dovetails and period-appropriate fixings. Later 19th-century interpretations and 1930 Georgian-style reproductions display different machine tooling, secondary woods like pine or oak, and varying patination on the brass hardware. Comparing the joinery inside the cupboard offers clear clues to the date.

Are these commodes suitable for small bedrooms?

Their compact dimensions make them exceptionally well-suited for smaller spaces where a standard bedside table might crowd the room. The enclosed cabinet design keeps surfaces tidy by hiding clutter out of sight. Square or rectangular pot cupboards fit neatly beside standard bed heights without dominating the layout. Tray-top variants add security for items placed on the surface.

What styles do these bedside commodes come in?

The listings encompass George III, Sheraton, and Chippendale aesthetics alongside Regency and William IV designs. Characteristics include straight legs, bracket feet, shaped trays, and tambour doors. Decorative elements range from plain mahogany panels to intricate boxwood and satinwood stringing. Paired options often reflect matching stylistic choices made during the original commission.
