What was the original purpose of a bottle coaster?

Coasters were designed to hold wine bottles and decanters on the dining table after the servants withdrew. Diners passed the bottle around the table within the coaster to keep the wine moving. The raised base protected polished wooden tables from rings and spills during evening meals.

How do I distinguish silver from Old Sheffield Plate?

Sterling silver pieces bear hallmarks indicating the assay office, maker, and date of manufacture. Old Sheffield Plate lacks these standard silver stamps and often shows a thin line of copper where the fused metal edges meet. Silver plate relies on electroplating from later decades, whereas Old Sheffield Plate involves mechanically fused silver and copper.

Are wooden coasters heavier than metal ones?

Mahogany and rosewood coasters possess a solid substantial weight, particularly when fitted with a turned wooden base or metal inserts. Silver and Old Sheffield Plate items carry a different density depending on the gauge of the metal and the presence of a weighted base. Treen and papier-mâché versions offer a lighter alternative for moving around the table.

Can I use these coasters for modern wine bottles?

Standard georgian bottle coasters accommodate traditional wine and port bottles comfortably. Bolder magnum sizes or modern wide-based bottles may exceed the internal diameter of eighteenth-century examples. Checking the internal measurements helps ensure a proper fit for the bottles you intend to use.
