A semainier is a specific type of tall chest traditionally built with seven drawers, one intended for each day of the week. These pieces offer a very narrow footprint while providing substantial vertical storage depth.

How do I style a tall chest?

A tall chest works well in bedrooms or dressing rooms where floor space is limited but vertical storage is required. The narrow profile allows the piece to fit neatly between windows or in smaller alcoves while maintaining a commanding presence.

Are marble tops original?

Many nineteenth-century French chests feature fitted marble slabs designed to protect the wood and provide a durable surface. These tops vary in colour from white to grey and dark shades depending on the period and regional style.

What woods were commonly used?

Cabinetmakers relied heavily on mahogany, walnut, and oak for the primary carcase construction of these vertical chests. Exotic veneers like kingwood, rosewood, and fruitwood were frequently applied to create decorative patterned surfaces.
