How are these dressers cleaned?

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry lint-free cloth to protect the timber grain and prevent particulate buildup. Apply occasional applications of beeswax to nourish older oak and maintain a soft protective sheen. Avoid commercial liquid polishes containing silicones, which penetrate porous timber and damage historical finishes over time. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber splitting.

Where do these pieces fit best?

These substantial storage items anchor dining rooms and kitchens, serving as practical sideboards for tableware and linens. Their robust timber presence also suits open-plan living areas and wide hallways. Measure available floor space carefully, accounting for the swing radius of heavy cabinet doors and pulled drawers. Ensure placement allows adequate clearance around surrounding furniture to preserve balanced room proportions.

How do I date a piece?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks, and timber shrinkage visible on the interior drawer linings and backboards. Hand-cut dovetails and pegged joints generally indicate eighteenth or nineteenth-century origin. Compare styling details such as hardware mounts, carving depth, and moulding profiles against documented regional eras. Revival pieces from later decades often display machine-sawn timber elements and standardised iron fittings.

What is scrubbed oak?

Scrubbed oak refers to timber surfaces that have been washed or stripped of dark historic finishes down to the raw grain. This treatment reveals the pale natural tone and tactile texture of the underlying hardwood. This finish is frequently found on pieces adapted for lighter interior schemes while retaining their robust historic construction. It highlights the natural figuring of the oak without relying on traditional wax or polish.
