How were bedside drawers used historically?

These small cabinets provided enclosed storage for personal items kept close to the bed. They held chamber pots, books or night-time necessities before modern plumbing. Over time, their role shifted towards supporting bedside lamps and holding smaller decorative accessories in domestic bedrooms.

How do I identify a Louis XV style piece?

Louis XV style furniture relies on curved lines, cabriole legs and organic decorative motifs. It avoids straight edges in favour of flowing shapes. Marquetry and subtle floral carvings frequently accompany this aesthetic, distinguishing it from stricter geometric designs.

Are marble tops original to these cabinets?

Marble tops appear regularly on nineteenth-century and twentieth-century French bedside cabinets. They provided a durable, wipe-clean surface for water jugs and lamps. Many surviving pieces retain their fitted stone surfaces, which vary in colour from white to mottled grey.

How do I incorporate them into modern bedrooms?

Compact bedside drawers fit easily beside contemporary bed frames due to their neat proportions. Their neutral painted finishes or warm wood tones complement various interior styles. Pairs allow for symmetrical placement, while single tables serve effectively as lamp stands or occasional furniture.
