Where should I hang a chimney glass?

These mirrors are traditionally positioned directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to reflect light and anchor the room's proportions. They also function effectively as large wall mirrors in reception rooms or hallways when given sufficient wall space.

How do I date these mirrors?

Dating relies on examining the frame construction, the type of gesso used, and the style of the carved ornamentation. Nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-carved wooden elements and traditional gesso layering that differ from twentieth-century manufacturing methods.

Are these mirrors heavy?

Yes, because they are constructed from solid carved wood and thick layers of gesso combined with glass. Proper wall anchoring or secure placement resting on a sturdy mantel is essential for safety.
