How do I choose the right size chandelier?

Consider the dimensions of the room and the height of the ceiling when selecting a fixture. Larger multi-light chandeliers require substantial vertical clearance to hang properly without dominating the space. Smaller single-light pendants or hall lanterns suit lower ceilings or more compact hallways where expansive arm spans would obstruct movement.

Are these antique fixtures wired for modern use?

Many period lighting pieces require professional rewiring to comply with current electrical standards and safety codes. A qualified electrician can adapt older lamp holders while preserving the original metal and crystal structure. It is advisable to check the internal wiring of any newly acquired fixture before permanent installation in a domestic setting.

How do I clean a crystal chandelier?

Maintenance involves gently wiping individual glass drops and metal arms with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with a mild cleaning solution. Removing dust regularly prevents buildup that dulls the natural refraction of the crystal. For thorough cleaning, delicate crystal lustres can be detached individually, washed by hand, and carefully reattached to the frame.

What is the difference between an Empire and a Rococo style fixture?

Empire style lighting draws on classical Roman and Greek motifs, featuring symmetrical lines, urns, wreaths and military emblems. These pieces often employ heavy gilt bronze with a formal, architectural presence. Rococo fixtures embrace asymmetrical forms, curved scrolling arms, and organic motifs such as leaves and shells. They offer a more exuberant and fluid aesthetic compared to Neoclassical designs.
