What is a french bergere armchair?

A French bergere armchair is a traditional upholstered seat featuring enclosed wooden sides and a deep, comfortable profile. These chairs were designed for formal domestic interiors and reading rooms. Unlike standard open armchairs, the bergere offers solid or caned side panels that enclose the sitter. They emerged in historic French interiors and remain prized for their distinct silhouette.

How do I spot louis xv and louis xvii styles?

Louis XV style armchairs are easily recognised by their flowing, curved lines, cabriole legs, and organic scrollwork. They embody the decorative freedom of the mid-eighteenth century. In contrast, Louis XVI style pieces display straight, fluted legs, rectangular backrests, and strict symmetrical geometry. This later neoclassical approach values architectural restraint over sweeping curves.

Are these armchairs comfortable for daily use?

These armchairs are constructed with generous proportions and supportive deep seating designed for extended relaxation. Many examples feature sprung bases and upholstered backrests. Modern comfort levels often depend on the condition of the internal webbing and padding. Buyers frequently select pieces with newly updated upholstery for everyday seating.

How should I care for caned panels?

Caned panels require gentle dusting and protection from excessive dryness or direct heat sources. Keeping the natural cane slightly humidified prevents the material from becoming brittle. Avoid pressing heavily against the centre of caned side panels or backrests. Proper weight distribution ensures the woven lattice maintains its structural tension over time.
