What subjects appear most often?

The subjects range from portraits of gentlemen and ladies to landscapes, military guardsmen, and still life compositions of fruit. Historical genre scenes also feature among the selections. Artists drew on academic training to record these diverse themes, reflecting the tastes and interests of the nineteenth century.

How do I care for these frames?

Giltwood frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to protect the delicate gold leaf surfaces. Avoid liquid cleaners and moisture. Keeping the paintings away from direct sunlight and dramatic humidity changes protects both the oil pigments and the underlying canvas or panel.

How are canvas and panel works different?

Canvas provides a flexible woven support that responds to stretching, while panel offers a rigid wooden surface for the oil paint. Both methods were standard practice during the Victorian era. Panel works sometimes appear in smaller formats, whereas larger portraits and landscapes more commonly utilise canvas.
