What is inside a fitted dressing box?

These boxes contain a complex arrangement of compartments designed to hold grooming tools, jewellery, and small accessories. Many include original cut glass bottles with silver caps, velvet-lined trays, and fold-out mirrors. Beneath the primary removable trays, makers frequently incorporated secret drawers accessed via hidden release catches to secure private valuables.

How do I date a fitted dressing box?

Dating relies on examining the timber choices, construction techniques, and any accompanying hallmarks on silver components. Victorian examples often feature coromandel or burr walnut with heavy brass work, while Georgian pieces display simpler, elegant lines in rosewood or mahogany. Maker marks stamped onto the leather linings, locks, or silver mounts provide additional clues to the exact decade of manufacture.

Were these boxes meant for men or women?

Makers produced versions tailored to both ladies and gentlemen, though surviving examples frequently lean towards ladies travelling sets. Gentleman's variants typically housed shaving gear, hair brushes, and valet accessories rather than cosmetic jars and jewellery partitions. Internal layouts and the specific selection of fitted glass bottles usually indicate the intended user of the case.

How do I care for the wood and leather?

Maintaining these pieces requires gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth to preserve the polished finish of the exterior timber. Leather interiors and velvet linings benefit from minimal moisture exposure and gentle dusting to prevent degradation over time. Keeping the boxes away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations protects the wood veneer and prevents the glue joints from drying out.
