What is a vesta case?

A vesta case is a small pocket container built to store wax matches safely. They include an integrated serrated strike strip on the base. Invented in the nineteenth century, these cases prevented friction matches from igniting accidentally in pockets.

How do I date my match case?

Dating relies on the assay hallmarks stamped into the silver. These marks typically include a maker's mark, a purity standard symbol, an assay office town mark, and a date letter. Matching the date letter to regional assay office records reveals the exact year of manufacture.

How were these cases carried?

Owners usually carried them in waistcoat pockets or attached them to watch chains known as alberts or watch fobs. Gentlemen and ladies alike used them for daily lighting needs. Some pieces combined match storage with sovereign holders or miniature compartments for stamps and snuff.

What is a novelty vesta?

A novelty vesta is a match case shaped to resemble an animal, object, or humorous figure rather than a standard box. Examples include boars, cigars, and horseshoes. Silversmiths produced these in limited numbers, making them particularly sought after by collectors today.
