What was an edwardian wooden stool used for?

These items served varied everyday roles in period homes, functioning as piano seats, dressing table stools, fireside footstools and luggage stands in guest bedrooms. Taller examples also functioned as clerk stools or bar seating, while folding racks accommodated heavy travel bags.

How do I identify an Edwardian piece?

Edwardian items typically date from the opening decades of the twentieth century, displaying lighter construction and simpler revival styles than their Victorian predecessors. They frequently utilise oak or mahogany, sometimes featuring modest inlay or satinwood banding rather than heavy carving.

Can I use these stools daily?

Most pieces are built from solid hardwoods like oak, mahogany and beech, making them structurally sound for regular sitting or supporting weight. Upholstered top pads can withstand normal domestic use, though older needlework or fragile cane seats require more mindful placement.

What is a metamorphic stool?

A metamorphic piece incorporates hinged wooden sections that allow the furniture to alter its physical form, usually converting from a low stool into a set of library steps. These items relied on sturdy brass hinges and pivots to ensure safe transformation between functions.
