What were Edwardian silver pill boxes used for?

These small containers held medicinal pills, lozenges, or snuff for personal use throughout the day. Wealthy owners carried them in pockets or handbags as functional accessories. They also served as decorative trinket boxes on dressing tables for rings and small keepsakes. The miniature scale made them portable items of personal luxury.

How do I know if a pill box is Edwardian?

Check the hallmarks stamped on the silver, which typically show date letters corresponding to the first decade of the twentieth century. Design styles such as early Art Nouveau and traditional repousse work also point to this era. Assay office marks from cities like Birmingham, Chester, and London confirm the British provenance and exact year of manufacture. Stylistic elements match the broader decorative arts of the period.

Are these pill boxes made of solid silver?

Most pieces feature solid sterling silver construction marked with standard British hallmarks for silver purity. Some continental examples utilise similar high-grade silver standards. Interior gilt finishes sometimes appear, adding a thin layer of gold wash to the silver surface. Maker marks and silver stamps guarantee the metallic composition.

How should I clean antique silver pill boxes?

Use a soft microfibre cloth to gently remove dust and tarnishing without abrasive polishes that damage delicate details. Avoid harsh chemical dips, especially on pieces with enamel, glass, or tortoiseshell inserts. Store the items in dry conditions away from direct sunlight to protect vulnerable materials like coloured glass and enamel. Professional cleaning is rarely necessary for well-maintained silver.
