Will a standard modern mattress fit an edwardian bedstead?

Many older frames deviate from contemporary metric dimensions, particularly older single and three-quarter sizes. Check the internal rail measurements carefully before sourcing a mattress. Custom mattresses can be ordered to fit non-standard widths and lengths if the original frame cannot accommodate a modern standard size.

How do I assemble an antique metal bed?

Most iron and brass frames use tapered dovetail joints or wedge fixings on the corners to secure the side rails to the head and footboards. Tapping these joints gently with a rubber mallet locks the structure firmly into place. Ensure the frame stands on a level floor before tightening any components to prevent twisting the side rails.

Can wooden bed frames be dismantled easily?

Timber bedsteads typically utilise metal bed bolts passing through the corner posts into threaded sockets within the side rails. A standard spanner removes these bolts for transport or relocation. Store the bolts and brackets safely together during moves to protect the original internal hardware.

How do I clean brass and iron frames?

Unlacquered brass develops a natural patina over time that many collectors prefer to leave undisturbed. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth prevents dust accumulation without altering the surface. Iron components benefit from light wiping with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes on antique metal finishes.
