What is a dovetailed wooden trunk used for?

These trunks were historically utilised for storing blankets, tools, clothing, and personal possessions during travel or domestic life. Today, they function well as living room storage tables, bedroom blanket boxes, or hallway furniture.

How do I date an old trunk?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, hand tools used on the joints, and the style of the hardware and locks. Earlier examples from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries often feature heavier hand-hewn boards, whilst Victorian pieces commonly utilise standard pine with machine-assisted or neat hand-cut dovetails.

Are camphor wood trunks waterproof?

Camphor wood naturally repels insects and moisture, which made it the preferred material for nineteenth-century military and travel chests. These pieces were built to protect uniforms and papers in humid climates.

What is the difference between a chest and a trunk?

The terms are often used interchangeably, though a chest traditionally refers to a heavy storage box with a flat lid, whilst a trunk often implies travel utility. Many listings on this page describe items that function as both blanket boxes and general storage chests.
