How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Heavy overmantel mirrors require secure wall fixings anchored directly into masonry or substantial timber studs to support the considerable weight of the wood and glass. Professional mirror hangers often utilise mirror plates or heavy-duty brackets attached to the frame's back structure for stability.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many nineteenth and eighteenth-century frames retain their original mercury or early float glass plates, which often display characteristic foxing, light oxidation, and minor surface blemishes. Replacement glass frequently appears in listings where earlier plates became damaged or degraded beyond practical use over the decades.

How do I clean a gilt frame?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry brush prevents the accumulation of dirt within the intricate carved crevices of gesso and wood ornamentation. Moisture and commercial cleaning solvents should be avoided entirely, as they easily strip or discolour fragile historical gold leaf applications.

What is a trumeau mirror?

A trumeau mirror incorporates a decorative painted panel or artwork directly above the glass plate within a unified architectural frame. Originating largely in eighteenth and nineteenth-century French interiors, these pieces were designed to fit flush against wall panels.
