How do I hang a heavy mahogany mirror safely?

These frames require secure wall fixings suited to the weight of the timber and glass. Using appropriate wall plugs and steel brackets distributes the load evenly across the structure. Position the hanging wire or D-rings firmly into the main timber frame rather than secondary backing boards. Professional installation ensures the piece remains stable over time.

Are these mirrors original Georgian or later revivals?

Distinguishing period pieces from later revivals involves examining the construction methods, timber patination and fixing nails. Eighteenth-century examples display hand-cut joinery and aged mahogany surfaces. Nineteenth and twentieth-century revival pieces often utilise machine-sawn components while imitating earlier Chippendale styles. Checking the backboards and glass plates helps clarify the actual age of the item.

How should I clean antique mirror glass?

Cleaning historic glass requires gentle methods to protect both the plate and the surrounding timber frame. Using mild soapy water applied sparingly with a soft cloth prevents moisture damage to the silvering or foil. Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the glass, as moisture can seep behind the plate and accelerate foxing. Wipe the timber frame with a dry cloth only.

What is a pier mirror?

A pier mirror is a tall glass designed to hang on the narrow wall space between windows. These pieces often feature matching console tables or wall brackets placed beneath them. In period interiors, they served to bounce natural light deeper into the room. Their elongated proportions distinguish them from standard rectangular wall mirrors.
