What fits inside these cabinets?

These cabinets house small objects like geological specimens, microscope slides, watches, and delicate curiosities. The shallow multi-drawer layout provides organised space for items requiring careful sorting and protection from dust.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on construction methods, drawer joinery styles, and characteristic decorative details like Georgian carving or Victorian brass hardware. Secondary woods inside the cabinet often offer further clues regarding the manufacturing era and regional workshop traditions.

Are the drawer pulls original?

Original brass pulls, shell handles, and label holders appear on many period examples, showing uniform wear matching the timber. Replacement hardware typically displays mismatched fixing holes or differing patination compared to the surrounding mahogany.

How should I maintain the wood?

Maintenance involves applying quality beeswax occasionally and keeping the mahogany away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Gentle dusting with a soft cloth preserves the natural sheen of the polished timber surface without harming the finish.
