How do I identify French styles?

French styles display distinct structural lines associated with specific royal periods, such as the curved cabriole legs of Louis XV or the straight fluted supports of Louis XVI. Carved motifs like acanthus leaves, ribbons, and floral crests provide further period indicators. Paint application and frame proportions often mirror the architectural fashions of the originating decade.

Are the paint finishes original?

Surface analysis reveals whether paint layers date to the original period of manufacture or represent later decorative updates. Original finishes typically exhibit craquelure and subtle wear consistent with age. Subsequent overpainting often covers the primary gesso and pigment layers, altering the textural quality of the surface.

Can these chairs be used daily?

Historic seating requires mindful daily use depending on the stability of the wooden joinery and the condition of internal webbing. Frames reinforced with traditional joinery remain sturdy, though antique textiles may need protective care. Many examples function well in modern interiors when placed away from direct sunlight and heavy wear.

What defines a matched pair?

A matched pair consists of two chairs sharing identical dimensions, timber types, carved ornament, and finishing details created together in the same workshop. Minor variations can occur in hand-carved elements, but the overall silhouette and decorative program align. Matching pairs hold greater significance than assembled sets collected at later dates.
