What is a crapaud armchair?

A crapaud armchair is a low nineteenth century French seat with deep padding and a fully upholstered frame. The design prioritises a low centre of gravity and enclosed seating. Most examples feature tub shapes or square backs designed for small sitting rooms and boudoirs.

How do I choose between styles?

Consider whether you want a plain square back or a high buttoned curved back version. Square sided models offer a formal silhouette, while tub shapes feel more enclosed. Some pieces arrive ready for upholstery, allowing you to select your own textile finish.

How were these chairs used?

These seats served as low occasional furniture in nineteenth century French parlours and bedrooms. Their compact dimensions suited them to intimate conversation areas. They function today as accent chairs in sitting rooms or reading corners.

What fabrics do these chairs use?

Original finishes include leather and ticking, while internal construction relies on calico and hessian over wood and beech frames. Many pieces remain in their foundational calico or hessian. This unrecovered state allows buyers to apply cotton, linen, or other custom materials.
