What is a coromandel writing desk?

A coromandel writing desk is a nineteenth-century portable writing box or stationary cabinet made from heavily figured tropical hardwood. These pieces typically feature hinged slopes, internal compartments, and decorative brass or mother of pearl mounts. They were designed for letter writing and document storage in prosperous Victorian and Regency households. Many include secret drawers and fitted glass inkwells.

How do I use a writing slope?

A writing slope opens along a central hinge to form an inclined writing surface covered in leather or velvet. The interior holds stationery, pens, and inkwells while keeping unfinished correspondence secure. Portable versions were often placed on regular dining or library tables during use. Folding the box back together neatly concealed all writing materials.

How can I tell the period?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as brass banding, Gothic Revival architectural motifs, or Louis XV curves. Regency pieces often display cleaner classical lines, whereas Victorian examples favour heavier ornamentation. Maker signatures stamped into the lock plates or wood frequently provide a precise year of manufacture. Secondary woods and construction methods also point towards the mid to late nineteenth century.
