What is the difference between a toilet mirror and a cheval mirror?

A toilet mirror is a compact tabletop glass designed to sit on a dressing chest, usually featuring a small drawer base. It provides a half-length reflection suitable for grooming while seated. A cheval mirror is a tall, freestanding floor model that pivots within vertical side standards. It offers a full-length view and stands independently on the floor.

How do I date a mahogany swing mirror?

Dating relies on timber selection, structural proportions, and decorative motifs characteristic of specific periods. Georgian and Regency pieces typically show leaner lines, finer mahogany veneers, and delicate bracket feet. Victorian examples frequently display heavier proportions, more robust carving, and deeper drawer configurations. Secondary woods and hardware styles further confirm the manufacturing era.

Where should I place a swing mirror in a room?

Tabletop versions sit comfortably on dressing tables, chests of drawers, or sideboards where they catch ambient light. Ensure the surface is level and deep enough to support the weight of the frame. Freestanding cheval mirrors work well in bedrooms or dressing areas adjacent to wardrobes. Position them perpendicular to windows to maximise the reflection of natural daylight.

Are these mirrors easy to maintain?

Maintenance involves gentle cleaning of the wood and glass using appropriate dry or mildly damp cloths. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can degrade historic French polish or wax finishes. Period mirrors benefit from periodic checks of the pivot screws and side pins to ensure the frame remains secure. Keeping them out of direct sunlight prevents the timber and veneer from drying out.
