How do I choose the right size?

Historical bed frames often deviate from modern mattress dimensions, requiring careful measurement of the internal rails and slat space before purchase. Many antique frames accommodate custom mattress makers who can tailor a piece to fit historical proportions without altering the original woodwork.

Can antique beds support modern mattresses?

Most antique wooden bedsteads require modern wooden slats or a low-profile base inserted within the rails to support contemporary spring or foam mattresses securely. Careful positioning ensures the weight rests on the internal support system rather than straining the antique side rails.

How do I care for carved timber?

Maintenance requires regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and the occasional application of traditional beeswax to nourish the dry grain. Keep wooden frames away from direct heat sources and dramatic humidity shifts to prevent the solid timber panels from splitting.

How do I tell different revival styles apart?

Jacobean revival pieces display heavy geometric mouldings, strapwork, and dark oak surfaces reminiscent of seventeenth-century domestic interiors. French provincial and Louis styles favour softer walnut or painted finishes, featuring curved cabriole legs, floral garlands, and flowing asymmetrical cartouches.
