How do I fit a modern mattress?

Many antique bedsteads require custom mattress dimensions or internal wooden slats to support standard modern sizes safely. It helps to check the internal width and length measurements provided in each listing before purchase. Upholstered and wooden side rails often bolt together using traditional iron fixings that accommodate standard bases once properly adjusted.

Are these beds easy to dismantle?

Most nineteenth and early twentieth-century wooden bedsteads utilise standard knock-down bolt connections between the headboard, footboard, and side rails. This modular construction allowed historical transport and simplifies modern room relocation. Assembly typically requires basic spanners to secure the internal bed bolts without damaging the surrounding walnut timber.

How do I clean walnut wood?

Maintain the polished walnut surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grit accumulation. Avoid silicone-based polishes and excessive moisture which can degrade antique finishes. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps nourish the timber and maintain its natural lustre.

How do I date a bedstead?

Dating relies on stylistic markers such as the curves of a Louis XV revival versus the straight geometry of Art Deco pieces. Construction joints, screw types, and backing boards also offer clues to the manufacturing era. Comparing the primary materials, such as burr walnut veneers versus solid timber, helps narrow down the period of origin.
