How do I use a monk bench?

These versatile pieces serve as hallway seating and storage boxes. By pivoting the upper back forward over the armrests, the furniture converts into a small table. The interior compartment beneath the hinged seat holds items like shoes, gloves, or linens. They suit entryways, reception halls, and dining spaces where dual-function furniture is useful.

Are these benches genuinely old?

The pieces span several centuries, ranging from 17th-century originals to 18th-century country examples and Victorian or Edwardian revival pieces. Revival furniture from the 19th and early 20th centuries makes up a large proportion of what you see. Examining the construction methods, timber ageing, and tool marks helps determine whether a piece dates to the 1600s or follows historical revival styles later on.

Where were these placed originally?

Historically, high-backed wooden settles stood in the entrance halls of country houses and farmhouses. Their solid backs blocked cold drafts from sweeping across open rooms. They provided a secure place to sit while removing outerwear and kept everyday items tucked away inside the base box.

Solid oak is the dominant material seen across these items, valued for its strength and rich grain. Carpenters also utilised pine and pitch pine for secondary structural components. Surfaces often feature wax or polished finishes that highlight the natural texture of the oak and the detailed hand-carved panels.
