Where should I place a console table?

These tables suit hallways, entryways and principal reception rooms where wall space allows for a statement piece of furniture. Their shallow depth ensures they fit comfortably in narrow circulation areas without obstructing movement. Pairing the table with a hanging mirror or artwork creates a balanced focal point. They also function effectively as serving surfaces in dining spaces.

How do I care for the marble top?

Clean the stone surface regularly with a soft, damp cloth and mild, neutral soap. Avoid acidic liquids like vinegar, wine or citrus juice, which can etch polished marble. Using coasters and protective mats prevents scratching and staining. Periodic application of specialist marble wax helps maintain the sheen.

How do I identify the period?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks and timber species visible on the underside and interior joints of the frame. Stylistic indicators such as cabriole legs, carved gilding motifs and marble edge profiles also point towards specific eras. Consulting historical design characteristics helps separate eighteenth-century originals from later nineteenth-century revival pieces. Maker stamps or signatures provide definitive dating evidence when present.
