How do I choose the right size?

Consider the proportions of your bedroom relative to the height of the headboard and footboard. Double and king size options require adequate floor space to showcase the carved woodwork properly. Measure ceiling clearance if selecting high-backed styles or pieces with ornate crestings. Ensure side rails accommodate standard modern mattress lengths while preserving the historical proportions.

What styles are available?

Listings feature Louis XV and Louis XVI revivals, French Provincial, and Rococo designs. Each style offers distinct decorative characteristics ranging from asymmetrical curves to balanced neoclassical symmetry. Painted wood, natural walnut, and mahogany finishes define the visual appearance. Upholstered panels and cane inserts frequently complement the carved wooden structures.

How do I care for the wood?

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent buildup on intricate carvings and mouldings. Avoid placing antique timber furniture in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent warping. Treat painted and gilded surfaces with care by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. Conditioning natural walnut or oak periodically maintains the moisture balance of the timber.

Can I use a modern mattress?

Most antique bed frames accept standard mattress dimensions with appropriate slat support systems. Custom slat adjustments may be necessary for older frames to ensure proper mattress fit. Check the internal measurements of the side rails before purchasing bedding. Low-end styles and daybeds often have specific depth requirements for comfortable use.
